Police seeking man wanted in beating

Aiken authorities are looking for a 19-year-old man they say beat up another teen twice after a bad drug deal.

John Marshal Maxey, who also goes by the name of Mark and has two addresses in police reports, is wanted on charges of assault and battery with intent to kill, second-degree lynching, first-degree burglary and malicious injury to personal property.

Investigators from the Aiken Department of Public Safety accuse Mr. Maxey of breaking into the East Midlothian Court home of Patrick S. Noel, 18, early Monday and beating him as he lay in bed.

Mr. Noel and Mr. Maxey had gotten into a fight Sunday evening after a drug deal, according to police reports.

Mr. Noel suffered severe head and facial trauma, the reports state.

Armed robbery reported at Blockbuster Video

Police are investigating a late Monday night armed robbery at a south Augusta video store.

At about 11 p.m., a man holding a black handgun, entered Blockbuster Video, 3128 Peach Orchard Road, and told two clerks to "give it up," said Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Glen Rahn.

The robber was wearing black slacks and a long grey shirt, police said. He was about six-feet tall and wore a green, camouflage cap to conceal his head and face, police said.

After grabbing the undisclosed amount of cash, the robber exited the business and ran toward Windsor Spring Road, Investigator Rahn said.

No injuries were reported but police are reviewing a surveillance videotape, he said.

Qualifying will open in race

Qualifying for Richmond County Board of Education District 3 begins this morning.

A special election will be held to fill the unexpired term of John Seitz, who resigned May 30. Filing for office will begin at 8:30 a.m. today and remain open until 5 p.m. Thursday.

The qualifying fee is $100, and candidates must have lived in their districts for one year and in Richmond County for two years.

The special election will be held Sept. 19. The term ends in December.

Boy recovering from gunshot to stomach

An Augusta teenager was up and moving around at a hospital Monday after being shot in the stomach near the corner of 12th Street and Laney-Walker Boulevard on Saturday, according to the teen's mother, Latonya Mahone.

Antwon Maurice Mahone was shot once in the stomach while walking home from E&J Curry grocery store. Ms. Mahone said doctors at Medical College of Georgia Hospital attempted to remove the bullet but could not.

The case is under investigation, but authorities are treating it as a random act, said Richmond County sheriff's Sgt. Calvin Chew.

Police investigate possible sex assault

Aiken authorities are investigating the possible sexual assault of a 79-year-old woman late last week.

A neighbor told investigators for the Aiken Department of Public Safety that she went to check on the woman Friday and saw her, without any pants or underwear, and a man with no shirt pulling up his zipper.

That man ran out the rear door.

Aiken has deadline for pet registration

Aiken city residents have another chance to register their pets before police begin enforcing a new law.

A pet registration fair is scheduled for tonight at Citizens Park, off of Pine Log Road, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Pet owners can pay a one-time licensing fee for the life of the animal. The animal also can get a rabies shot and a micro-chip.

It will be the last pet fair in which the city will tag any sterilized pet at no charge.

The tag fee for each animal is $100, with a cap of $200 for two to five fertile pets and $300 for six or more unsterilized pets.

Couple is robbed of bicycle at gunpoint

A man and woman were robbed at gunpoint near the corner of Third and Watkins streets Sunday, a Richmond County sheriff's report stated.

The man told deputies that the robber threatened to shoot if they did not give up their mountain bike.

Man is charged after car flips on interstate

An Augusta man was charged with reckless driving after he lost control of his vehicle and it flipped off the road Sunday morning, according to a North Augusta Department of Public Safety report.

Brett Sidney Crampton, 44, of 2509 Smith St., was traveling east on Interstate 20 at 80 mph in a 65 mph zone and tried to turn right onto the Martintown Road exit, according to the report.

Mr. Crampton was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital. He was discharged Monday, according to hospital officials.

College plans media, paralegal programs

Augusta Technical College will begin offering associate's degrees in media communications and paralegal studies this fall.

The six-quarter media communications program will cover areas of graphic design, illustration, Web design and animation.

The paralegal studies program can be completed in eight quarters for a day student and 11 for a night student.

Both degree programs require a high school diploma or GED.

Section of road will close for drain work

The 600 block of Cambridge Road from Aumond Road to Exeter Drive will close at 8:30 a.m. today and reopen at 5 p.m. Aug. 11, according to the Augusta Engineering Department.

Drivers should use Sussex Road, Exeter Road and Canterbury Drive. The road will be closed so that a storm drain line can be installed.

1,000-plus homes lose power in Aiken

More than 1,000 electrical customers lost service early Monday night as strong thunderstorms rolled through Aiken County.

About 1,600 customers were without power for an hour Monday, according to a South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. spokesman. Power was been restored by 7:30 p.m. to some of the affected areas.
