Double scholars

Identical twins Kennedy (left) and Chandler Rouse, 7, completed the Vacation Reading Program at the main library on Greene Street by reading 20 books each. They received certificates and goody bags that contained a toy, bookmark, sticker and coupons to Applebee's, Domino's Pizza, Sonic, Souper Salad, Putt-Putt Golf and Games and the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame's Botanical Gardens.

Saralyn Ingram, the community services librarian, said 6,789 children completed the program in the East Central Georgia Regional Library system last summer. This summer, staffers have prepared for a 10 percent increase, partly because of the new Diamond Lakes Branch Library, the Burke County Library and the new Columbia County Library in Evans, she said. Folders from the packets must be returned to a library in the region by closing time Friday, July 28. Participants are urged to turn in their folders early to ensure receiving a goody bag, said Carolyn Fortson, the head of children's services. For more information, call (706) 821-2600.
