Pickup flies off interstate bridge

A red Chevrolet pickup traveled off an Interstate 20 bridge Sunday night and landed on Washington Road after its driver lost control and struck a guard rail, according to the Georgia State Patrol.


Jose Garcia, 26, was taken by ambulance to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, according Trooper First Class Amelio Lamkin of the state patrol's Thomson post.


Mr. Garcia is in fair condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.


The pickup was heading toward Columbia in the left lane of I-20 when Mr. Garcia lost control, veered to the right, then struck a right side guard rail.

The vehicle catapulted through the left side guard rail and plummeted about 20 feet down the gap between the eastbound and westbound bridges, according to Trooper First Class Lamkin.


The truck landed on an eastbound lane of Washington Road. Mr. Garcia was ejected.


No other pedestrians or drivers were injured. No other cars were nearby when the pickup landed on Washington Road, Trooper First Class Lamkin said.

Man arrested after threats

An Augusta man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly threatened another man and became verbally abusive with a Richmond County sheriff's deputy.

According to a police report, Kelcey Dwayne Roberts, 26, of the 200 block of Brandywine Place, was confronted by a property manager after he parked his car behind his neighbor's vehicle, blocking her in. Mr. Roberts became angry with the manager and threatened to beat him up, the report said.

When the deputy arrived, Mr. Roberts was intoxicated and uncooperative, the report said. He was placed under arrest and charged with disorderly conduct.

Loaded shotgun is stolen from closet

An Augusta man told Richmond County sheriff's deputies that someone ransacked his home in the 3500 block of Spring Glen Lane on Saturday and stole his loaded shotgun, a sheriff's report said.

The man told police the intruder found the weapon in his bedroom closet and that the gun was loaded with five shells, the report said.

Deputies were called to check out shotgun blasts heard on nearby Cameron Drive about an hour before the man reported the burglary, the report said. Whether the two incidents are related has not been determined.

Cameras taken after window is pried open

A 73-year-old Augusta man told deputies that someone stole two cameras valued at $1,490 from his home on the 1900 block of Preston Drive on Saturday, according to a Richmond County sheriff's report.

The man said the thief pried open his front window. A video camera worth $1,300 and a camera worth $190 were stolen, the report said.

Items are stolen from woman's unlocked car

Thieves entered a Warner Robins, Ga., woman's vehicle Saturday and stole more than $900 in video games, clothing and other items, a Richmond County sheriff's report said.

The woman told deputies that she believes the thieves got into her vehicle through an unlocked rear window while it was parked on the 4300 block of Windsor Spring Road.

The items included an X-Box 360 console valued at $400, three games worth $180, one bag full of men's and women's clothing worth $200, a set of queen-size bed sheets worth $50 and a bag of toiletries worth $100, the report said.

Police break up large brawl on Yates Drive

Deputies were summoned to a large fight Saturday evening on the 2400 block of Yates Drive, according to a Richmond County sheriff's report.

People were brawling in the road and two yards. The crowd was dispersed by the deputies.

Education will be workshop's focus

Concerned Parents of Columbia County is sponsoring a parental empowerment workshop at Savannah Rapids Pavilion on July 31.

The free workshop, presented by the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, will discuss ways parents can ensure that their children are getting a quality education.
