Video catches thieves at work

Richmond County sheriff's investigators have released a surveillance video of Friday's robbery of a south Augusta jewelry store.

A man walked into Royal Jewelers Store on Deans Bridge Road at 3 p.m. Friday and began smashing a glass display case with a hammer. He stole $8,000 in jewelry.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, the robber was wearing a black or dark stocking cap, a black-and-white bandanna concealing his face and a dark blue, baggy crewneck T-shirt. He was also wearing a black leather glove on his right hand, according to Investigator Paul Godden.

He ran from the store with two other men.

The robber with the hammer was described as a black male between the ages of 16 and 20, 150 to 180 pounds and about 6 feet tall, Investigator Godden said.

Pedestrian is stabbed in stomach, robbed

Two robbers stabbed a man in the stomach Friday night and took $50 from him while he was walking at Wrightsboro Road and Monte Sano Avenue, according to a Richmond County sheriff's report.

The 22-year-old man told a Richmond County sheriff's officer that two men told him to give them all of his money, then stabbed him in the abdominal area with a sharp object.

Convenience store is robbed at gunpoint

A man wearing a black T-shirt over his face robbed a convenience store at gunpoint Friday night, according to a Richmond County sheriff's report.

At 6:13 p.m., a man entered the J.C. Food Store in the 2400 block of Golden Camp Road. He pointed a silver gun at the clerk and told him to give him all the money.

R. Kelly's Augusta concert is canceled

The R. Kelly concert scheduled for Aug. 19 at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center has been canceled. According to a news release, the concert will not be rescheduled.

Woman says $3,200 was stolen from car

A woman told a Richmond County sheriff's officer that someone stole $3,200 from under the floor mat of her car.

According to a sheriff's report filed Friday, Pamela Anita Gwinn said that in May, a man who had done odd jobs for her in the past asked whether he could wash her car. She said yes.

When Ms. Gwinn paid him, he left in a hurry, according to the report.

Later, she remembered she had left the money from selling a building she owned beneath a floor mat.

She described the man named Nathaniel as 6 feet tall, white with short blond hair and a full beard.

United Way wants help with school supplies

The United Way of Aiken County, along with health and human service organizations, will collect school supplies to give away.

The organization will be collecting supplies from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wal-Mart stores at 2035 Whiskey Road, Aiken, and 1201 Knox Ave., North Augusta.

The items will be distributed in August.

Woman ejected from car during wreck dies

A 30-year-old woman from Blue Ridge, Ga., died Saturday evening in Thomson after being ejected from the rear passenger seat of a car that had hydroplaned and struck a tree in Wilkes County, said Trooper Robert Turner with the Georgia State Patrol.

Tabitha Resendiz, 30, was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. while en route to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Wilkes County Coroner William Hopkins said.

Timothy Ray Bradford, 51, lost control of the vehicle while heading west on Georgia Highway 10. The car then spun off the road and hit a tree, Trooper Turner said. Ms. Resendiz and her boyfriend, Audberto Jimenez, 35, were riding with Mr. Bradford, he said.

Ms. Resendiz, who was not wearing her seat belt, was ejected through the rear window and thrown 25 feet , Trooper Turner said.

Mr. Bradford was being treated for minor injuries at Wills Memorial Hospital in Washington, Ga., and Mr. Jimenez was not injured badly, he said.

Beer drinker is found with stolen jewelry

A Richmond County sheriff's officer on Saturday found nine gold rings, a gold watch, and several other pieces of jewelry in the pocket of a man he stopped for drinking beer in 2500 block of Porter Street.

According to a police report, Samuel Vinson was charged with obstruction of a police officer after Deputy Josh Taylor determined the jewelry did not belong to Mr. Vinson.

Deputy Taylor was later called to a burglary in the 2400 block of Lawton Street near where he had first stopped Mr. Vinson. The items found on him were listed as stolen during the burglary, the report said.
