WINDER, Ga. - Barrow County sheriff's deputies arrested a 13-year-old boy after a Thursday home invasion in which he is accused of holding a sword to the throat of another boy and threatening to kill him.
Statham police responded to a call about an intruder at a house on Greenfield Drive in the Woodberry Subdivision off Atlanta Highway at about 5 a.m. Thursday.
The resident told police that his 11-year-old son awoke to find someone in his bedroom.
The 13-year-old, whose identity was not released because of his age, removed a sword from a display case in the 11-year-old's bedroom, held it to the younger boy's throat and threatened to kill him if he made a sound, according to police.
The teen fled the house with a pair of swords - one with a 10-inch blade and one with a 20-inch blade, Statham police Sgt. Thomas Hinson said. After the 13-year-old fled, the younger boy woke his father, who called 911.
As Statham police arrived, an officer saw the teen running from the house and gave chase, but officers were unable to catch the teen, police said.
Sheriff's deputies, who had responded to the robbery along with Statham police, soon found the 13-year-old walking on Atlanta Highway. As a sheriff's deputy arrested the boy, the 13-year-old attempted to attack the deputy with the sword with the 10-inch blade, police said.
Police did not recover the 20-inch sword, Sgt. Hinson said.
The boy was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and obstruction of an officer.
He also faces a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer for attacking the deputy, police said.
The boy was taken to the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center.
The boy entered the house through an unlocked door, according to police. Sgt. Hinson called the invasion "very atypical," adding, "it's not something that normally happens in this town."
