AUGUSTA, Ga. - On the afternoon of June 25, 2006, the angel of silence came into the room of Mrs.Frances Christie and with chilly fingers sealed the lips of a loving mother. Her soul winged its flight from this world of sin, sorrow and pain to a place of eternal rest. Mrs. Frances Christie was born on September 13, 1922 in Augusta, GA. the daughter of the late Glen & Frances Howard. She was united in marriage to the late Deacon Joseph Christie on February 15, 1942. To this union four children were born. Carolyn C. Scott, daughter, preceded her in death in March 2005. Frances and her late husband lived in New York for 40 years until her retirement from Federation of the Handicapped due to illness. She attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York where she served many ministries. In 1982, after the death of her husband Joseph, she returned to Augusta and renewed her membership with Spirit Creek Baptist Church where she was a indefatiguable worker. Frances was a proud individual, with an unusual determination. She was a very loving mother and dear friend. She loved her church and was a dedicated member. Frances leaves to mourn her memory her sons, Stanley Christie, Alvin Christie; daughter, Mary Louise Christie; son-in-law, Earl Scott; granddaughter, Camille Fernandez; grandson, Alvin Fernandez, great grand children, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. EVANS, Ga. - Dr. Jean Giles Jacobs formerly of Milledgeville, passed away Monday June 26, 2006, at Westword Nursing Home in Evans, GA, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Dr. Jacobs was born in Andalusia, Alabama on February 24, 1921, and received her B.S. degree in 1942 (U of Alabama) M.A. in 1945 (George Peabody College) and Columbia Teachers College 1946, and her Ed. D., 1956 from George Peabody College. She served in an administrative capacity as Department Chairman at the U. of Chattanooga, Tenn., Peabody College, Nashville Tenn., Austin Peay State College, Women's College of GA, (now GA College and State University) and Springfield College, Springfield Massachusetts. Additionally Dr. Jacobs served on various policy making committees in Heath and Physical Education, graduate committees, and professional organizations, as well as being recipient of Honor Award of the GA Association for Heath, Physical Education, and Recreation, 1965 and special recognition by the Southeast American Red Cross. She was listed in the Who's Who in the South and Southeast, Who's Who Among Young American Educators, and Who's Who Among American Women. After retiring from college administration, Dr. Jacobs accepted a position at the Baldwin County Heath Department, setting up various programs and also serving procedures in the Baldwin County schools. Dr. Jacobs was a leader in civic organizations, a devoted and much loved mother, sister and friend whose giving and caring attitude will long be remembered. Dr. Jacobs is survived by one daughter, Doris Jacobs Blalock and husband, Dr. H. Sherman Blalock of Augusta, GA.; his three children, Elizabeth Schappell (John), John Sherman Blalock (Beth), and Joseph Morgan Blalock; her sister Rachael Gillis Laird of Savannah, three nieces: Sarah Laird Jones, Capt. Norman S. Laird, Marsha Laird Sullivan (Martin), her dear friend Mrs. William T. He served in the U.S. Army Artillery as a radioman in the South Pacific during World War II, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart medal. Mr. brooks lived many years in Anchorage, AK, working primarily as a management engineer at Ft. Richardson. He had spent much of his life doing Christian evangelism from Alaska to Key West, Washington State to Virginia and Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, three sisters and two wives, Margaret Spear Brooks and Ivy Caudill Brooks. He is survived by daughters, Maritana Appling of Marietta, GA, Paula Kudadad of San Diego, CA and Becky Coffman of Huntington, WV; brother, John G. Reid Sr. Memorial Gibson Chapel with Reverend Ronnie Devine officiating. Interment will be at Walker Cemetery.
