World Cup: Portugal ousts Netherlands
NUREMBERG, Germany - Portugal scored the game's only goal, and things got brutal from there: Cleats bashed into thighs and shoulders, heads butted and elbows flew. Never had more yellow cards been pulled in a World Cup match.

Overtime
n Potomac, Md., Ben Curtis was two holes from his first victory since the 2003 British Open when play was stopped again Monday because of a thunderstorm.

World Cup: England nips Ecuado
STUTTGART, Germany - David Beckham was feeling nauseous. England's offense was just as sickly, with nothing to show for an hour of aimless passing against Ecuador in the 90-degree heat.

Atlanta team has a winning touch
GA Nike Elite had already traversed one of the most difficult - not to mention surprising - roads to the championship game in the seven-year history of the Garden City Roundball Classic.

Overtime
In Raleigh, N.C., Carolina Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette agreed to a five-year contract with the team less than a week after leading the franchise to its first Stanley Cup.

Socceroos get booted on final play
KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany - The Socceroos were tough on Italy. The referee was tougher on Australia.

The Card Sharks
BERLIN - Their ranks include a tax inspector, a tire salesman, even an airline pilot. Then they step on the soccer field and become referees.

Mother Nature wins on tournament's first day
WIMBLEDON, England - Martina Hingis played at Wimbledon for the first time since 2001, and it was as though she never left. Those crafty strokes. Well-timed net rushes. And rain.

You don't have to be in church to practice beliefs
Every so often, I'm asked what church I attend, and I sometimes hesitate to answer because I really don't have a church I attend regularly, and when I give that answer, people's perception of me usually changes. It's like I go from being an intelligent guy to a heathen in a matter of seconds.

It's possible for girl, mom to compromise on clothes
THIS WEEK'S PROBLEM: My mom tries to dictate my closet. I have a favorite style, and my mom really likes preppy clothes (which I really don't go for), so she always tries to make me buy stuff from stores such as American Eagle, even though she knows I don't like it. When I tell her "no," she starts yelling at me because I'm "too picky," and leaves the store in a rage.
