A 10-year-old Augusta boy died Thursday night in a wreck on Interstate 75 near East Ridge, Tenn., Tennessee authorities said.
The Hamilton County Medical Examiner's office confirmed Friday that Aduwardo Oliviere, of Winston Way in south Augusta, died of injuries suffered in the crash.
The boy and four family members were traveling north on I-75 bound for St. Louis when their dark blue 1988 Mercury Mountaineer sport utility vehicle crashed at 10:19 p.m. just north of the Georgia state line.
Cpl. J.R. Reed of the East Ridge Police Department said Aduwardo's stepfather, Raymond Brown, was driving the SUV when he veered off the interstate to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of him, which had abruptly stopped.
Mr. Brown lost control of the SUV, causing it to roll several times, land on its hood and eject Aduwardo.
Aduwardo was taken to T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital in Chattanooga, where he died of blunt force injuries.
Mr. Brown, along with Aduwardo's mother, Semra Brown; 16-year-old stepsister, Shanda Brown; and 20-year-old brother, Omar Oliviere, were taken to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga to be treated for injuries. They have since been released.
