Segui comes forward about HGH use

NEW YORK - Former major leaguer David Segui said he used HGH and was among the players mentioned by Jason Grimsley to federal investigators. Segui added that he used the drug with a doctor's prescription because of a growth hormone deficiency.

Segui, who spent 15 years in the majors and retired in 2004, said on ESPN's Outside the Lines on Sunday that he continues to use HGH legally. He said he first started using the hormone after the deficiency was found when he went for blood work before surgery during his playing career.

The 39-year-old first baseman said Grimsley came to him this past off- season, seeking advice about HGH and how it might help him recover from major arm surgery. Grimsley was waived by the Arizona Diamondbacks this month after acknowledging HGH use and accusing other players of its use in a statement to federal agents.

Segui played for Baltimore, the New York Mets, Montreal, Seattle, Toronto, Texas and Cleveland from 1990-2004, finishing with a .291 average and 139 homers. He and Grimsley were Orioles teammates in 2004.

The names of the other players accused by Grimsley have not yet been made public.

METS: New York activated right fielder Xavier Nady from the disabled list.

Nady had been on the 15-day DL since May 30 after having an appendectomy. He was hitting .267 with nine homers and 22 RBI in 161 at-bats during his first season with the NL East-leading Mets.

"He's excited about being back. He was chomping at the bit," manager Willie Randolph said. "He's been having a nice year for us, too. He's gotten some big hits."

Nady was not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Baltimore Orioles, but he will be back in right field tonight against the Cincinnati Reds, Randolph said.

"I think he was a little mad at me today because I didn't put him in the lineup, but he had a late night last night and got in real early," the manager said.

BRAVES: Atlanta placed first baseman-outfielder Brian Jordan on the 15-day disabled list and recalled first baseman-outfielder Scott Thorman from Triple-A Richmond.

Jordan injured his right clavicle Friday night when he was hit near the collarbone on a ball hit by Alex Cora in a 4-1 loss to Boston. Jordan was hitting .214 with three home runs and 10 RBI. The move was retroactive to Saturday.

Thorman hit .324 with 15 homers and 44 RBI at Richmond.

PIRATES: Pittsburgh right-hander Kip Wells wasn't expected to return until the All-Star break after surgery to repair a blocked artery near his right shoulder. He'll beat that deadline by three weeks.

Wells, the right-hander who led all major leaguers with 18 losses last season, was activated off the 15-day disabled list and will start Tuesday night in Kansas City. Right-hander Victor Santos went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right rotator cuff, and outfielder Jody Gerut was put on the 60-day disabled list.

A's karsay to retire

OAKLAND, Calif. - Steve Karsay had the rare luxury of beginning and ending his career with the same club.

Karsay announced his retirement from the Oakland Athletics, one day after pitching the A's to victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in 17 innings with two innings of work - his first victory since Sept. 11, 2002, with the New York Yankees.

"Sometimes you dig down deep and see what the future holds and what you want to do," Karsay said after Oakland's 10th straight victory, 5-2 over the Dodgers. "This is just a piece of my life."

The 34-year-old Karsay finishes his 11-year big league career with a 32-39 record, with 41 saves and a 4.01 ERA in 357 appearances and 40 starts.
