21-year-old dies in crash

A Wrightsville, Ga., man died early Saturday when he lost control of his car and ran into a tree, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Matthew Daniel Carter, 21, was driving around a curve on Liberty Grove Church Road, five miles south of Wrightsville, at 3:05 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle, the state patrol post in Swainsboro said.

The vehicle crashed into a tree, causing it to overturn and Mr. Carter to be partially ejected.

Mr. Carter was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.

Two masked men rob Chinese restaurant

Armed robbers stole hundreds of dollars from a local Chinese restaurant late Friday, according to a Richmond County sheriff's report.

Employees at the Oriental Chinese Restaurant on Tobacco Road in Hephzibah told deputies that two men wearing black ski masks entered the restaurant's rear screen door. Once inside, the men pulled out guns and demanded money.

The report states that the men took $400.

Items taken from six vehicles in N. Augusta

Several residents of a North Augusta neighborhood said their vehicles were broken into Friday.

According to a North Augusta Department of Public Safety report, items were stolen from the inside of six vehicles parked in the Butlers Mill subdivision off Walnut Lane. Among the items taken were a .45-caliber handgun, a DVD player, compact discs and money.

All of the incidents happened within minutes of each other.

15 cases of chicken products are stolen

Someone stole 15 cases of chicken nuggets and fillets this weekend from a tractor-trailer, according to a Richmond County sheriff's report.

The trucker hauling the chicken, which was valued at more than $1,200, told an officer that the nuggets were stolen from the back of his rig while it was parked in the 3200 block of Wrightsboro Road.

Pills, money are among items taken from home

Money, credit cards and prescription pills were among the items stolen from an Augusta home Friday night, a police report states.

The resident told Richmond County sheriff's deputies that when she returned home from work, the front door of her house on the 2000 block of Ivey Road was open.

The thief took one bottle of Lorcet, one bottle of Xanax, a brown leather wallet, $180, two credit cards and a driver's license.

$650 is stolen from tattoo shop register

Someone took cash from a register at a downtown tattoo shop this weekend, a police report states.

An employee of Tribal Urge Tattoo on Broad Street said that $650 was stolen out of the cash register while he was in another room late Friday.

Part of intersection closes for road work

The Davis Road, Scott Nixon Memorial Drive intersection will be closed from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week while a sewer line is installed and road construction occurs along Walton Way Extension and Davis Road, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Northbound drivers on the extension will be detoured left onto Scott Nixon Memorial Drive, right onto Bobby Jones Expressway, right onto Washington Road, and right back onto Davis Road.

Board wants public's opinion on services

The Georgia Department of Human Resources board wants to hear what services Augusta-area residents think it should be providing by 2008, the agency said.

DHR oversees health and social services, including the Department of Family and Children Services.

The board will take comments from the public at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 600 Building Auditorium at Augusta Technical College.
