He had lived in Georgia for over 62 years and in Augusta for the past 13 years. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army where he was assigned to the 43rd Division in the 100th Infantry Battalion (SED) (NIESI), better known as the "One Puca Puca Unit" the most decorated Unit in U.S. Military History. Mr. Cenate was a lifetime member of the VFW. He loved his home and loved being there. LAKELAND, FLA. - Joel B. Marks, 89, an active Lakelander since 1965, died Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Marks was born in Augusta, Georgia in 1917. Graveside services will be held Friday, June 16, 2006 at 11:00 AM in Westover Memorial Park with Rabbi Ronald Gerson officiating. He and his wife Thelma became actively involved in community and civic activities in Lakeland after his retirement from Marks Brothers Manufacturing in Augusta, moving here at age 49. Mr. Marks is a graduate of Georgia Tech. He served in the U. S. Navy in World War II with the rank of Lieutenant. He was a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Polk Museum of Art and an honorary member of the Board of Governors. Mr. Marks is the recipient of the Harrison-Hooks Lifetime achievement award given by the museum. He was a volunteer with Mayfair Kids. Mr. Marks was an active member of the Sheltered Workshop. He was president from 1972 to 1976 of the Polk Association for Retarded Citizens. He was a member of the Lakeland Yacht and Country Club and Lone Palm Golf Club. He was a member of Temple Emanuel and a former member of Adas Yeshurun Synagogue and Congregation Children of Israel. He was preceded in death by his wife Thelma in 2003. She retired from Jefferson County Health Department and was an artist and charter member of the Jefferson County Arts Guild. She is predeceased by her husband, James O. Irwin, Jr. Survivors include her two sons, Jim and his wife Mavis Irwin and David and his wife Becky Irwin; one sister, Irene Hodges; two grandchildren, Heather Phillips and Ben Irwin; three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Irwin, Jordan Phillips and Elijah Phillips. The family received friends on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Louisville Chapel. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at the Bethel Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with Pastors Larry Montgomery and Will Anderson officiating.
