In law program

Shannon Schoultz, daughter of Elizabeth Schoultz, of Jackson, has been selected to attend the Presidential Classroom's Law and Justice in a Democracy program in Washington, D.C.

Citadel dean's list

Charles Willis Cooper III and Benjamin Anderson Hunter, both of North Augusta, have been named to the dean's list at The Citadel, Charleston, S.C.

Earns biology degree

Melody Anne Flowers, of North Augusta, has earned a Master of Science degree in biology from Georgia Southern University, Statesboro.

Culbertson Day

May 18 was designated as Virginia Culbertson Day at Merriwether Middle School. The newly created Virginia Culbertson Reading Award was given to a sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grader nominated by their teachers as being avid readers.

In military academies

The following area students have been appointed to service academies for the upcoming school year:

Christopher Michael Green and Theodore Torgesen, North Augusta; Chad Nickell, Aiken; Marisol Slater, New Ellenton, U.S. Naval Academy; and Nicholas Huffines, Aiken, U.S. Air Force Academy.

On dean's list

Paul Garrett, of North Augusta, has been named to the dean's list at the University of West Georgia, Carrollton.

Marine of year

Leonard Palguta has received the 2005 Marine of the Year Award and trophy from Riverfront Marines of North Augusta Detachment No. 1132.

Military milestones

- Army Pvt. Michael C. Hall, son of Herman C. Hall III, of Windsor, and Lydia Emerson, of Aiken, has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

- Army Pvt. Deidre N. Simmons, a 2003 graduate of Silver Bluff High School and daughter of Stevie L. Schoultz and Nellie R. Simmons, both of Jackson, has graduated from the Food Service Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Va.
