JACKSON, S.C.-Funeral Services for Mr. Robert Thomas Thornton, 79, of Third Street, Jackson, SC, who died June 5, 2006, will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home. Rev. Eddie Moyer officiating. Interment in Jackson Memorial Cemetery with Veteran's Honors. Mr. Thornton was a native of Wilkes County, Georgia, having made Jackson his home for the past 53 years. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Constance Steed Thornton and a member of the Baptist faith. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, he was a member of the personal Honor Guard for General Douglas McArthur. Mr. Thornton was a former member of the Jackson Town Council and the Jackson Development Board. During his tenure as a member of the Town Council, he was instrumental in the founding of the City Park which was named in his honor. Mr. Thornton was the retired owner of the Jackson Supermarket which he operated for 50 years. He afforded many of the youth of the Jackson community an opportunity for employment of which he will be remembered. Mr. Thornton was benevolent to all in the community, especially in the time of need. He was an avid truck farmer, gardener, lover of wildlife and a collector of antique John Deere Tractors. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Dennis Boring, Jackson; grandchildren, EmmaLee Boring, Jackson, Brett Boring, Charleston, Shane Boring and his wife, Chris, Columbia; four sisters, Emma Jean Jones and Marilyn Newsome, both of Washington, GA, Joann Hart, Beech Island and Becky Thomasson, Tignall, GA; special neighbors, Patrick and Juanice Gordy and their children, Amanda, Justin and Matthew, all of Jackson; a devoted dog, Bubba. Pallbearers will be Nephews Nicky Mims, Jimmy Mims, Bob Jones, Don Risher, Jack Newsome and Glenn Jones. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this Monday evening from 7 to 9.
