EVANS, Ga. - Susan Karnowski, 59, beloved daughter, wife, mother and friend passed away Friday, June 9, 2006 at her residence after a long battle with ovarian cancer. She married Lawrence Stephen Karnowski, Jr. in 1966. Sue moved to many places with her family until settling in Columbia County in 1985. Sue survived cancer in her early 20's in a miraculous way and that experience birthed a new faith in her. She promised God that if she lived to see her children grow up, she would live for Him. She honored that promise by pouring her life into all those with whom she came in contact: wayward teenagers, abandoned wives, and lost souls found comfort in her presence. She was well known in the Christian community for her faithfulness to God, wonderful sense of humor and generous spirit. She touched the lives of many people wherever she went. A past member of both Martinez Baptist Church and Marvin United Methodist Church, she most recently served Grace Baptist Church. She used her beautiful voice in the church chorus and as a member of the Augusta Choral Society. She was also instrumental in the growth and development of the Emmaus community. She was a member of Bible Study Fellowship for seven years. She served various volunteer church and community organizations. She enjoyed music and reading, but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Steve Karnowski of Evans, GA.; her father, William Roy Buck and her mother, Janet Buck of San Diego, CA; her children, John and Peggy Karnowski of Duluth, GA, Steve and Erin Karnowski of Oklahoma City, OK, and Marron and Don Harper of Evans, GA. She is also survived by her Uncle John and Aunt Barbara Veale of Boone, IA and Uncle Joe and Margie Veale of Escondido, CA, and eight grandchildren, Aaron, Bethany, Rachel, Elissa, Brianna, Jaden, Lawson, and Landon. Mr. Thornton was a former member of the Jackson Town Council and the Jackson Development Board. During his tenure as a member of the Town Council, he was instrumental in the founding of the City Park which was named in his honor. Mr. Thornton was the retired owner of the Jackson Supermarket which he operated for 50 years. He afforded many of the youth of the Jackson community an opportunity for employment of which he will be remembered. Mr. Thornton was benevolent to all in the community, especially in the time of need. He was an avid truck farmer, gardener, lover of wildlife and a collector of antique John Deere Tractors. AUGUSTA, Ga. - Col. (Ret.) Jasper R. "Johnny" Johnson died June 8, 2006 after a protracted battle with multiple myeloma. Col. Johnson was born October 29, 1921 in Durham, NC, the son of Eva May Morgan Johnson and Edwin P. Johnson. Col. Johnson entered the United States Army during World War II and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Among his decorations were the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Prior to his retirement, Col. Johnson served as President of the Physical Evaluation Board at Ft. Gordon and, after retirement from the Army, became Executive Director of the Augusta-Richmond County Clean Community Commission. Col. Johnson was married for 53 years to Katherine Elizabeth Johnson, who died September 28, 2000. He is survived by his three sons and their wives, James R. Johnson and Nancy S. Johnson, of Atlanta, GA, Joseph E. Johnson and Pamela V. Johnson of Alexandria, VA, and Robert A. Johnson and Nancy R. Johnson of Rochester, NY; nine grandchildren and one brother, Wade C. Susan Karnowski   (EVANS, Ga.)
EVANS, Ga. - Susan Karnowski, 59, beloved daughter, wife, mother and friend passed away Friday, June 9, 2006 at her residence after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Funeral services will be held at Grace Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 13 at 10:00 A.M. with Reverend William E. Hilley officiating. Interment will follow in Bellevue Memorial Gardens. Sue was born in Boone, Iowa where she lived until age 12. She moved to San Diego, CA with her family and graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1965. She married Lawrence Stephen Karnowski, Jr. in 1966. Sue moved to many places with her family until settling in Columbia County in 1985. Sue survived cancer in her early 20's in a miraculous way and that experience birthed a new faith in her. She promised God that if she lived to see her children grow up, she would live for Him. She honored that promise by pouring her life into all those with whom she came in contact: wayward teenagers, abandoned wives, and lost souls found comfort in her presence. She was well known in the Christian community for her faithfulness to God, wonderful sense of humor and generous spirit. She touched the lives of many people wherever she went. A past member of both Martinez Baptist Church and Marvin United Methodist Church, she most recently served Grace Baptist Church. She used her beautiful voice in the church chorus and as a member of the Augusta Choral Society. She was also instrumental in the growth and development of the Emmaus community. She was a member of Bible Study Fellowship for seven years. She served various volunteer church and community organizations. She enjoyed music and reading, but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Steve Karnowski of Evans, GA.; her father, William Roy Buck and her mother, Janet Buck of San Diego, CA; her children, John and Peggy Karnowski of Duluth, GA, Steve and Erin Karnowski of Oklahoma City, OK, and Marron and Don Harper of Evans, GA. She was a conscientious worker and the highlight of her secular career was perhaps when she became Director of Medical Records for the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC. She was a member of Republican Baptist Church in rural Edgefield County, SC she attended the Ladies Sunday School Class. Born on October 28, 1919 in Brooklyn, NY to the late John and Marguerite Van Horn Carter, she had lived in Waynesboro since the early 1990's. Mrs. Wedden was retired from the "Advoacate Program" in Criminal Justice, Miami-Dade Co., FL. Mrs. Wedden was a member of McBean Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Sarto Wedden. Survivors include two sons, Robert C. Wedden (Cindy) of Venice, FL, and James V. Wedden (Marie) of Sabastian, FL; daughter, Donna E Wedden Helms (Tony) of Kennesaw, GA; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
