Proposed development would move city forward
Much has been made of the city of Augusta's looming $5 million budget deficit. Much has also been made of a proposed $120 million condominium project on the city-owned pension property fronting the Savannah River. Though these may be separate issues, they are tied to each other, and I would like to take this opportunity to address how the actions taken on these issues will define our city's future.

Sue survived cancer in her early 20's in a miraculous way and that experience birthed a new faith in her. She promised God that if she lived to see her children grow up, she would live for Him. She honored that promise by pouring her life into all those with whom she came in contact: wayward teenagers, abandoned wives, and lost souls found comfort in her presence. She was well known in the Christian community for her faithfulness to God, wonderful sense of humor and generous spirit. She touched the lives of many people wherever she went. A past member of both Martinez Baptist Church and Marvin United Methodist Church, she most recently served Grace Baptist Church. She used her beautiful voice in the church chorus and as a member of the Augusta Choral Society. She was also instrumental in the growth and development of the Emmaus community. She was a member of Bible Study Fellowship for seven years. She served various volunteer church and community organizations. She enjoyed music and reading, but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Steve Karnowski of Evans, GA.; her father, William Roy Buck and her mother, Janet Buck of San Diego, CA; her children, John and Peggy Karnowski of Duluth, GA, Steve and Erin Karnowski of Oklahoma City, OK, and Marron and Don Harper of Evans, GA. AUGUSTA, Ga. - Col. (Ret.) Jasper R. "Johnny" Johnson died June 8, 2006 after a protracted battle with multiple myeloma. Col. Johnson was born October 29, 1921 in Durham, NC, the son of Eva May Morgan Johnson and Edwin P. Johnson. Col. Johnson entered the United States Army during World War II and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Among his decorations were the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Prior to his retirement, Col. Johnson served as President of the Physical Evaluation Board at Ft. Gordon and, after retirement from the Army, became Executive Director of the Augusta-Richmond County Clean Community Commission. Col. Johnson was married for 53 years to Katherine Elizabeth Johnson, who died September 28, 2000. He is survived by his three sons and their wives, James R. Johnson and Nancy S. Johnson, of Atlanta, GA, Joseph E. Johnson and Pamela V. Johnson of Alexandria, VA, and Robert A. Johnson and Nancy R. Johnson of Rochester, NY; nine grandchildren and one brother, Wade C. Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward R. Gray Sr. of Brunswick and her brother, Edward R. Gray, Jr. of Darien, GA. She is survived by her husband, Dr. William L. Owens of Evans, Ga.; their son, William L. Owens II, and his wife, Kristy of Rock Hill, SC; two grandchildren, Charles Gray Owens of Asheville, NC and Ashley Dana Owens, of Rock Hill; her brother, Lawrence Gray and his wife, Melissa of Brunswick, GA. She is also survived by four nieces and a nephew. Mrs. Owens primary vocation was that of a Christian housewife and helpmate to her husband. She worked outside the home as Registered Records Administrator and retired from University Hospital in Augusta, GA. She graduated from Emory University School of Medical Records and worked in Medical Records for approximately 40 years. She sacrificed her career to follow her minister husband. She was a conscientious worker and the highlight of her secular career was perhaps when she became Director of Medical Records for the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC. She was a member of Republican Baptist Church in rural Edgefield County, SC she attended the Ladies Sunday School Class. The funeral is scheduled for 11:00 AM Monday at Republican Baptist Church with Reverends Richard Moss, Lance Thomas and Dr. William Owens officiating. AUGUSTA, Ga. - Col. (Ret.) Jasper R. "Johnny" Johnson died June 8, 2006 after a protracted battle with multiple myeloma. Col. Johnson was born October 29, 1921 in Durham, NC, the son of Eva May Morgan Johnson and Edwin P. Johnson. Col. Johnson entered the United States Army during World War II and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Among his decorations were the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Prior to his retirement, Col. Johnson served as President of the Physical Evaluation Board at Ft. Gordon and, after retirement from the Army, became Executive Director of the Augusta-Richmond County Clean Community Commission. Col. Johnson was married for 53 years to Katherine Elizabeth Johnson, who died September 28, 2000. He is survived by his three sons and their wives, James R. Johnson and Nancy S. Johnson, of Atlanta, GA, Joseph E. Johnson and Pamela V. Johnson of Alexandria, VA, and Robert A. Johnson and Nancy R. Johnson of Rochester, NY; nine grandchildren and one brother, Wade C.
