A wet start to summer break

Brandy Dorsey (right, center) and Katrice Drayton, both 9, wipe water from their faces after running through a spraying water hose with other children at the annual J.R. Riles End of the School Year Block Party. Hundreds of neighborhood children and parents attended the event, which featured a free cookout, food, drinks and ice cream and music by radio station WPRW-FM. The party, held in conjunction with the Augusta Recreation and Parks Department, also featured trolley car rides and the shooting water hose, both of which were provided by the Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department. It was held at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. and Swanee Quintet boulevards. Mr. Riles started the event because he grew up in the area and wanted the neighborhood children "to have something fun and constructive to do after a long school year."
