The reason President Bush and the Republicans are talking about gay marriage again is pure politics. They are increasingly desperate as the midterm elections approach. There's not a lot else to get people interested in voting for them, based on their record of the past five years.
But if they can appeal to the hatred, bigotry or discrimination in some people, they might move them to the polls to vote against that big, bad gay married couple that one day might move in down the street.
Personally, I'd rather have a gay couple living next door to me than some Bible-thumper trying to tell me and my wife how to conduct our lives.
I wonder if Bush's base is even dimly aware that this only becomes an issue about six months before an election, after which it disappears.
