Coffee shop to open in center

The River Commons shopping center in North Augusta is beginning to fill up.

A Starbucks is expected to open this fall at the retail strip on Knox Avenue, across from the Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Plans on file with North Augusta building officials show an 1,800-square-foot store proposed on one of the eight outparcel tracts at the center anchored by a Lowe's Home Improvement store.

Based on plans on file with the city of North Augusta, the Starbucks store will be similar in size and design to the one opened last year on Washington Road in Augusta.

The North Augusta Starbucks is being developed by Augusta-based Hull Storey Retail Group, the owner of River Commons.

North Augusta City Planner Scott Sterling said the Starbucks received conditional site plan approval in April. He expects construction to begin after plans receive final approval this summer.

The coffee shop will be just north of a proposed Walgreen's store at the north corner of the retail center's traffic-signaled entrance. Construction on the Walgreen's, which also received conditional approval in April, is also expected to begin this summer.

"That leaves seven more parcels to go, depending on how they break them up," he said, adding that developers have not yet submitted plans for additional stores at River Commons.

Lowe's, which opened its store last winter, occupies 18 of the center's 45 acres.
