He served with honor in the U.S. Army during WW II and the Korean Conflict and retired after 24 years of service as a Master Sergeant. He was past commander of the American Legion Post 192. Mr. Bass served as a volunteer fireman with 21 years of service. Mr. Bass was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Ann Lucas and father, Isaac Bass. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Bass; two daughters, Gloria (Gary) Miller, North Augusta and Gwen Phillips(Reynold Borseth), Grovetown, Ga.; three brothers, C.B. SAVANNAH, Ga.- David Lamar Guy, 70, of Savannah, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2006 at Marshview after a long illness. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Roscoe and James and one sister, Frances; his parents, Ernest R. and Lillian Huff Guy. He was born in Augusta, Ga., where he attended local school and played football for Augusta Junior College. He lived in Savannah from 1961 until 1978, and was then transferred to Tampa, Fla. where he stayed until 2004. He retired from General Motors Acceptance Corporation after 36 years of service, where served as Accounts Manager. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church on Barnard and President Street, in Savannah, Ga., where he worked with the children at the church. He was a wonderful father and will be sadly missed and he was always loved by his family. He is survived by a son, Christopher David Guy of Ft. Bernie Porter (AUGUSTA, Ga.)
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest on Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at University Hospital, Lieutenant Colonel Bernard U. "Bernie" Porter, husband of the late Pauline Chase Porter for 64 years. Bernie Porter was born March 29, 1919 in Ticonderoga, NY. He was a resident of Bennington, VT, when he was inducted into the United States Army in 1941. He served two years in England and Africa with AFHQ. He was later assigned to the 28th Division, made the landing into France and was a participant in the August 1944 Victory Parade through Paris as a front line officer. He was captured by the German Army during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. Then Lieutenant Porter was held in three prison camps, escaping first from Hammelburg, recaptured and placed on a forced march to Dachau Prison Camp. Two more escapes led him to American Forces and a return stateside in April, 1945. He later became a Paratrooper at Fort Benning, and served eighteen months in combat with the 24th Infantry Division during the Korean War, retiring in 1965. LTC Porter's twenty-six years of service included several command and staff assignments. He was the recipient of three Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts, and two Army Commendation Medals. Following retirement, Bernie founded and operated the Augusta Club Shop for twenty-four years, and was inducted into the Professional Clubmakers Society Hall of Fame in March, 2002. He was Commander of the Greater Augusta and State Chapters of the American Ex-POW's. LTC Porter is survived by his daughter, Pat Gold of Canton, GA son-in-law Dr. Nugget Gold; son, Jerry Porter of Deland, FL, daughter-in-law, Peggy Porter; grandchildren, Megan Gold, Michael Gold, Shanna Johnson and husband, Eric Johnson, Kendi Gilmore and husband, Chris Gilmore, Beth Porter Nelson and husband, Major Jay Nelson, Rev. Other survivors include his son, John Mark Pinion and his wife Destiny of Martinez; daughters, Lisa Copeland and her husband Dave of Aiken, Jeanne Bradley and her husband Leon of Hephzibah and Carolyn Rountree and her husband Ronnie of Jackson, SC; brothers, Gene Pinion, Donald Pinion, Fred and his wife Paula Pinion, and Jimmie Pinion all of Augusta; sisters, Juanita Taylor of Augusta, Barbara Bush of Augusta and Brenda Zepp of Martinez; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Pinion was born in Spartanburg, SC to the late John and Beatrice Bridges Pinion. He was WWII, Korean and Vietnam US Air Force veteran. He had worked for Georgia Regional State School and Hospital in the Maintenance Dept. and was a member of Fleming Baptist Church. The family said that he was a devoted grandfather and an avid Atlanta Braves fan and he loved to fish.
