Police arrested a 34-year-old Augusta man Thursday in connection with a fatal shooting in the Laney-Walker neighborhood that authorities are calling a drug deal gone wrong.
Richmond County sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles said Austin Muldrow, of the 1400 block of Florence Street, was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and booked at the Richmond County jail shortly after 6 p.m..
Just 13 hours earlier, Lt. Peebles said officers responded to a 911 call about gunshots heard along Florence Street and found 31-year-old Antonio McDaniels lying face-down on the sidewalk outside Mr. Muldrow's home.
According to Deputy Richmond County Coroner Charlena Graham, Mr. McDaniels was shot multiple times in the head and chest.
He was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead at about 5:45 a.m.
An autopsy will be performed today at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Atlanta crime lab to determine the precise cause of death, Ms. Graham said.
Before the shooting, Lt. Peebles said the men were making a "drug transaction," with Mr. Muldrow the dealer and Mr. McDaniel the buyer.
"It's too early to tell what exactly happened, but it was a deal that went bad," he said.
The lieutenant said the weapon used in the shooting was a 9 mm handgun. On Thursday afternoon, officers recovered numerous handguns matching that description and will test them to find a match, he added.
Lt. Peebles said Mr. Muldrow was the only person arrested in the case Thursday and said authorities believed he acted alone.
