HEPHZIBAH, Ga. - Hilda S. Hastings, 3709 Fairington Dr., Hephzibah, Ga., entered into rest at St. Joseph Hospital in Elmira, New York on May 2, 2006. She had been visiting her daughter at the time of her death. Born in Malone, New York, January 16, 1916, she was the eldest daughter of Harry Seymour and Clara Rivette. She was later married to Gibson Hastings of Malone who predeceased her in 1974. During World War II she worked with the Sun Valley Boot Company sewing combat boots and trigger finger mittens on contract for the Army. She remained with the company over 30-years before retiring to Augusta, Ga. where she had lived for the past 32 years. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Loren (Norma) Nesbit of Central Square, N.Y., Mrs. William (Diane) Kinner of Van Etten, N.Y. and Mrs. Burt(Irma) Kinner of Elmira; three sons, Earle (Shirley) Hastings of Fort Jackson, N.Y., Roderick Hastings of Augusta and Douglas Hastings of Hephzibah; two sisters, Mrs. Niles (Eleonar) Sorrell of Rome, N.Y. and Mrs. Malvern (Lyola) Sutton of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; two brothers, Darcy Seymour of Fort Pierce, Fla. and Carney Seymour of Rome; 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren. A memorial service was held in New York on May 5, 2006 with interment in the family plot in Fairview Cemetery, Dickinson Center. MARTINEZ, Ga. - Retired Petty Officer Walter F. Rachels, 83, entered into rest on May 9, 2006 at his home following an extended illness. He was born on October 29, 1922 in Bartow, Ga. to Walter Jasper and Susie Purvis Rachels. He was retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service. He was the founder and owner of Air Repair, Inc. in Washington, D.C. before retiring to Florida in 1967. He has lived in Augusta since 1997. Mr. Rachels was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sonia Dordick Rachels, who died this past June. He is survived by three sisters, Sue Rainer of Birmingham, Ala., Geneva Dubose of Grovetown and Mary Joe McNeely of Augusta. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as his devoted caregiver, Mary Riddles. He will be sorely missed by all. Mrs. Tomaino was a native of Utica, NY and lived most of her life in Utica, but moved to Augusta in 1999. She was a graduate of Utica School of Commerce and retired after more than 20 years of service as the Court Records Clerk for the Utica City Court. She was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church at Fort Gordon, GA and former member of Blessed Sacrament in Utica, NY. She was also a member of the West Lake Ladies Laker Club and Pinochle Club. Her attention to personal appearance, sense of style, personality and demeanor defied her 95+ years. Her longevity was due to remaining physically active, having interest in current affairs, traveling and a glass of wine each day. She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. All who knew Teresa loved and admired her, especially for her spunky and witty personality. EVANS, Ga. - Mr. J.W. 'Farmer' Chambers, 90, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2006 at Brandon Wilde. Mr. Chambers will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park. Mr. Chambers, a native of Baldwin County Georgia, had lived in Augusta since 1941. He retired from the University of Georgia extension service in 1978 after 38 years, 37 years of which he was the Richmond County Agricultural Extension Agent. For 30 years he hosted the early morning Farmer Chambers Farm show on WGAC radio. For 25 years he hosted the Georgia / South Carolina Farm Show on WJBF TV. For many years he wrote a weekly farm column called Farming Today and Homeowners Tips for the Augusta Chronicle. He organized and was the original owner of the Green Thumb Garden Store, which he sold a few years ago. Mr. Chambers was a member of Trinity On The Hill United Methodist Church and a member of the Trinity Adult Bible Class. He was also a member of the Exchange Club of Augusta and the Hephzibah Agricultural Club. He was an avid gardener and fisherman. Mr. Chambers' beloved wife of 58 years, Edith, died in 1998. He devoted the rest of his life to his family and friends providing love, support and inspiration. Survivors include his son, Joe W. Chambers, Jr. and his wife Jill of Springfield, Virginia; his daughter Alice Hare and her husband Bill of Atlanta, Georgia; his sister Virginia Folds and her husband Robert of Augusta, Georgia; six Grandchildren, William Burke Hare III, Alicia Hare, Brian Hare, Kevin Hare, Andy Chambers and Rebecca C.
