SAVANNAH, Ga. - Doctors in Memphis, Tenn., placed a stent in Savannah Mayor Otis Johnson's blocked artery Sunday after he suffered a heart attack. They are now contemplating when to move him from intensive care.
Mr. Johnson's brother Paul, who is in Memphis, said the mayor had a good night's rest and was doing well Monday morning. He hadn't spoken withdoctors to get a full prognosis.
"The question is now when they are going to move him to another room," he said.
It was unclear when the mayor might return to Savannah.
Otis Johnson was in Memphis attending the National Conference of Black Mayors when he suffered the heart attack Saturday afternoon.
Paul Johnson said Sunday that the mayor was taken by ambulance from the conference hotel to the hospital.
"He seems much stronger than he was yesterday," Paul Johnson said.
Savannah City Manager Michael Brown, who visited the mayor Sunday, promised to continue work on city council priorities as the mayor recovers.
"We talked about him and his family, and then we talked about the city and I assured him that we have a work agenda and we will continue on," Mr. Brown said. "It will be a little subdued here for a while but we are going to continue on with the work agenda."
On Sunday, rumors of the mayor's death spread around town.
Mr. Brown said no announcement on the mayor's condition was made Saturday evening because he could not find any confirmation.
Alderman Van Johnson said he received a call Saturday night from someone at the conference expressing sympathy for the mayor's death.
