In the past week three of the world's top Islamic jihad terrorists have made their presence known, the most recent being the videotape from al-Qaida's No. 2 man, Ayman al-Zawahri. His tape - along with the Osama bin Laden audio tape and the Abu Musab al-Zarqawi video tape that surfaced earlier - were obviously timed to beef up radical Islam's support for the Iraqi insurgency.

Say 'enough' to U.S. budget fiasco
Last spring, our Republican Congress passed a budget and tax blueprint calling for three major changes: $35 billion in cuts to vital national services; $70 billion in new tax cuts to the wealthiest 2 percent in this country; and an additional $35 billion tacked onto the federal deficit. This was extremely bad policy before Hurricane Katrina, but now it's a catastrophe in the making.Dan M. Thompson, Augusta

On evolution, science trumps faith
Many argue that evolution conflicts with the Bible, and should not be taught to their children. This response is similar to the one nearly 500 years ago when Copernicus showed that the observed motions of the sun, planets and stars fit far better with a fixed sun and spinning earth rotating about it, rather than the established view that everything revolves around a fixed, nonspinning earth. For more than 100 years, people were killed by religious authorities for their belief in the Copernican theory.Victor J. Reilly, Aiken, S.C.
Do you know where your soldiers are?
I read with interest in the April 24 Chronicle that our Defense Department currently is giving an intensive, two-week ground force combat training course, "12 to 16 hours a day," to a portion of a planned 10,000 U.S. Navy sailors at Fort Jackson, S.C., so they can be sent to Iraq and Afghanistan to relieve pressure on Army and Marine ground forces who have "faced repeated deployments to the region."Richard Netzley, Evans
