Ella Mae Nicholson (COLUMBIA, S.C.)



COLUMBIA, S.C. - First Lady Mrs. Ella Mae Nicholson crossed peacefully in the presence of her beloved granddaughters, Terry Ryant and Phyllis (Lolo) Brown at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia County on Friday, April 21, 2006. Ella Mae was born 2/29/1912 to Miss Fannie Corley and Sam Warren in Macon, Ga. Ella graduated from Wagener H.S. in Wagener, S.C. after which her family later moved to Columbia, S.C. There she met and later married Clifford Smith, Jr., who preceded her in death. From that union was born Clifford, Jr., James Roosevelt, Janie, Donald Caesar and Alphonso Suber. She later married Rev. General Grant Nicholson, Sr., Pastor of Prince of Peace Baptist Church who preceded her in death. From that union was born General Grant Nicholson, Jr., and Deborah Nicholson Ryant (Kirkland.) The First Lady also acknowledges a special son, Mr. Robert L. Mack (her little Bobby) whom she grew to loved as her caretaker in Columbia, S.C. Ella leaves tomourn her, four sons; Clifford Smith, Jr., wife, Arlene, Clinton Smith, wife Adela, Donald Caesar Smith, General Grant Nicholson, Jr., wife Elsie; two daughters, Janie Sullivan, Deborah N. Ryant, husband Elliott Kirkland, Jr.; special sons, Robert L. Mack, special daughter, Shirley A. Nicholson; brother-in-law, Marshall Nicholson and wife Dorothy; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Bradley; special nephew, Leonard Williams, large number of nieces of nephews, 18 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 33 great-great-grandchildren. Ella also leaves a host of other family members and friends. Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 27, 2006 at 2:00 PM from the Hayden Baptist Church Aiken, S.C. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the residence of the daughter, Deborah N. (Elliott) Ryant, 519 Autumn Glenn Rd, Columbia, S.C., or at the Jackson Brooks Funeral home beginning 3:00 P.M. Wednesday. The remains will lie in state at the church, Thursday from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
