COLUMBIA - South Carolina's annual spring game Saturday brought out 10,210 fans - only about a third of last year's turnout, but part of that could be blamed on rainy conditions.
Redshirt freshman Cade Thompson led the Garnet squad to a 35-7 win. He completed 10 of 13 passes for 136 yards and two scores.
Redshirt freshman Freddie Brown caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Thompson on the game's first drive. Brown was the scrimmage's leading receiver with four receptions for 75 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown strike from senior walk-on quarterback Brett Nichols.
The Garnet squad's Cory Boyd, a junior who sat out last season after violating team rules, had five carries for 87 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown run.
The Garnet team also scored on a 42-yard pass from Thompson to O.J. Murdock.
Last year's starting quarterback Blake Mitchell completed 10 of 27 passes for 133 yards for the Black quad. He had one touchdown and one interception.
Mitchell's favorite target was senior Noah Whiteside, who had four catches for 68 yards, including a 20-yard scoring strike from Mitchell.
Freshman safety Mychal Belcher had six tackles for the Garnet squad, and walk-on linebacker Cody Lucas picked off a pass from Mitchell for the only turnover of the scrimmage.
Sophomore Yvan Banag led the Black squad with six tackles, including a sack.
The game is the capper to the Gamecocks' spring practice. The season opens Aug. 31 at Mississippi State.
