STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mickey Westphal pitched a complete game, allowing just one unearned run on six hits to lead Georgia to a 6-1 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday.
Mississippi State (25-5, 6-4 Southeastern Conference) is now 18-1 at home and Westphal was the main reason for the one defeat. After allowing the unearned run in the second inning, the senior left-hander kept Mississippi State off balance the rest of the way.
Thomas Berkery had a hit for Mississippi State to extend his hitting streak to 27 games, tying a school record.
Georgia (20-10, 4-7) was leading 2-1 when it padded its lead with a three-run seventh inning. The runs came off MSU's starter Josh Johnson, who left the game after the seventh. Georgia had a run in the eighth to end the scoring.
Joey Side had two hits and drove in three runs for Georgia and Ryan Peisel had two hits and one RBI. Matt Robbins had a sacrifice fly for Georgia.
Westphal (3-0) remained undefeated. He struck out five.
Johnson (4-2) allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits in seven innings to take the loss for Mississippi State.
