William H. Schwalbert (AIKEN, S.C.)

AIKEN, S.C. - A memorial service for William Henry Schwalbert will be held Tuesday, April 11 at 2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Aiken. Mr. Schwalbert passed away on April 4, 2006. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 25, 1914 to the late Mr. and Mrs. William Arthur (Viola Smith) Schwalbert. Mr. Schwalbert graduated from the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1936 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He was employed by the Toledo Edison Company for forty years, retiring in 1976 as a Vice President. He and his wife moved to Bayonet Point, Florida in 1976 and to Aiken, South Carolina in 2000. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a major in the Army Corp of Engineers and stationed in New Guinea throughout most of the war. While living in Toledo, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Inverness Country Club of Toledo, Toledo Club, The Exchange Club of Toledo, The Toledo Symphony Orchestra and The Institute of Electrical Engineers. He served as President of the Toledo Symphony and was named Engineer of the Year by the Electrical Engineer Society in 1967 and the Toledo Technical Society in l973. In Florida, he was a member of Beacon Woods Country Club and St. Marks Presbyterian Church. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Aiken. His wife of 69 years, Nell died in December 2005. He is survived by son, James Gregory Schwalbert and wife, Beth of Islamorada, Florida; son, Russell William Schwalbert and wife, Jean of Aiken and sister, Mary L. Schwalbert and long time family friend, Carolyn Huggins of Crystal River, Florida. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Carolyn Hicks (Greg) of Tallahassee, Michael Schwalbert (Carla) of Boston, Dawn McGarity (Trip) of York, South Carolina and Dana Massey (Ray) of Aiken, South Carolina and five great grandchildren. The family will receive friends immediately after the service on Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Aiken, 224 Barnwell Avenue, Aiken, SC 29801.
