Get your digits straight

THE BIG CHANGE: Today is the first day that 10-digit dialing is mandatory for calling in the 706 area. All phone numbers dialed within the 706 zone - even calls placed from across the street - must be preceded by the three-digit area code.

WILL IT COST MORE?: There will be no billing changes, nor will dialing 1 be required, for local calls.

WHY THE EXTRA DIGITS?: The change is necessary because 706 numbers are nearly exhausted. When this occurs, new phone numbers will be issued with a 762 area code.

10-DIGIT TIPS: BellSouth has the following tips to ensure a simple transition to the new dialing system:

- Reprogram speed-dial numbers, dial-up Internet connections and any call block or call forwarding functions to include the area code.

- Make sure your cell phone's address book includes the area code.

- Change your fax machine's programmed numbers.

- Reprint checks, business cards and signs.
