11 home sites now available on river

NORTH AUGUSTA - Hammond's Ferry, a riverfront development in North Augusta, released 11 additional home sites to potential buyers Wednesday.

These lots are part of the original phase of construction in the mixed-use development.

"We'll continue to make lots available to the public on a regular basis," said Charlie Walker, the North Augusta Riverfront Co. and Hammond's Ferry sales director. The lots are available now because "they fit into the infrastructure already in place," he said.

The sites, which range in price from $49,500 to $110,000, are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Last spring, Hammond's Ferry sold 30 lots in Crystal Lake Borough, a residential area in the Savannah River community's first phase of development, through a lottery system.

At that time, Turner Simkins, the project manager, said more than 300 people had attended meetings where potential home buyers could register for the lottery.

Construction on these homes, and an additional 40 or so single-family homes, townhouses and condominiums, got under way last week.

"We've got some custom homes that are being built as well as speculative homes," Mr. Walker said.

Some of the houses could be complete by late summer or early fall, he said.

The sales director said the company probably would not use a lottery system in the future but likely would continue to release home sites as they become available.

"It prevents people from getting into a win-lose situation," Mr. Walker said. In addition, he said, "It will keep the pipeline full."

The community has 25 lots remaining in the first phase, Mr. Walker said, but they will not become available until road work into those areas has been completed.

The mixed-use community, which covers more than 200 acres, will include about 800 single-family homes, condominiums and apartments; retail and service businesses; restaurants; walking paths; two ponds; and a riverfront park.

"We're not a private, gated community," Mr. Walker said. "We're an extension of North Augusta."
