EDGEFIELD, S.C. - Mrs. Bessie Rainsford Yarborough, born June 17, 1918, died in Edgefield County Hospital on Tuesday, January 24, 2006. Born in Edgefield, she was the daughter of the late John and Allene Rainsford. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where she served as church organist for many years. Yarborough graduated from Converse College in 1939 where she was captain of the tennis and basketball teams and listed in Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges. She served as Regent of The Old 96th District Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Director of the Edgefield County Hospital Auxillary and Chairperson of the Edgefield County Democratic Party. She was a member of the Les Dames des Fleurs Garden Club and was selected South Carolina Outstanding District 4 Tree Farmer of 1996. Her love, compassion and intelligence influenced all those around her. Surviving are two sons, Colonel William Glenn Yarborough, Jr. and his wife, Betsy, Herbert Smith Yarborough and his wife, Susan; one daughter, Dr. Bessie Rainsford (Tina) Yarborough; a brother, John Rainsford, Jr.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Williams Glenn (ÓMuleÓ) Yarborough, and her beloved daughter, Allene Elizabeth (Betsy) Luquire. Graveside services will be held Thursday, January 26, 2006, 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary's Catholic Church, 302 Jeter St., Edgefield, SC 29824; to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 120 Wall St., 19th Floor, New York, NY 10005; or a charity of one's choice.
