A maverick switches herds

Former governor and U.S. Sen. Zell Miller was late to a pro-life rally Monday in Atlanta.

By his reckoning, several years late.

He poignantly apologized for not joining the cause before some 47 million unborn babies had been aborted.

As he so eloquently noted, those lives, cut down before they began, could have made a huge difference in our lives. What scientific advances have gone undone? What humanitarian efforts unlaunched? What amount of life and love unrealized?

Miller, a so-called maverick Democrat, was a victim of unthinking orthodoxy. If you're a Democrat, so it goes, you must be pro-choice.

Not so. Not anymore.

Welcome to the fight, Sen. Miller. Even the plaintiff in Roe v. Wade had a change of heart.

It's never too late to save a life.
