'Hostel'

Released: Jan. 6

MPAA RATING: R

MY THOUGHTS: In Hostel, two American college students are backpacking through Europe and run into a bit of mischief on the eastern part of the continent. I enjoyed this movie because it delivered what I wanted: a suspense thriller. The movie is well deserving of its R rating, with plenty of nudity and gore, but if you're looking for a suspense thriller that will have you laughing and later questioning your laughter, then Hostel is worth your time and money.

'Extraordinary machine'

Artist: Fiona Apple

RELEASED: Oct. 4

MY THOUGHTS: Extraordinary Machine, the third release by Fiona Apple, is a delight to the ears. The wonderful experimentation with melodies and the variety of moods offered within the CD's 12 tracks express true talent.

The fact that Ms. Apple also writes all of her music and lyrics is one of the best reasons to buy this album, especially given that we live in the era of lip-synching from stars such as Ashlee Simpson (although, given the poor quality of her voice, it was likely a good thing). Ms. Apple's style is truly unique, and her album is not to be missed.
