Community giving sets record in 2005

Thanks to unprecedented generosity from the community, The Augusta Chronicle's 2005 Empty Stocking Fund set an all-time fundraising record this holiday season.

Donations to the Empty Stocking Fund during the 2005 holiday totaled $120,159.56, far exceeding the 2004 record of $107,625.15.

The Empty Stocking Fund helped 1,233 families or 5,582 individuals, many of whom are single parents, caregivers unable to provide medicine and treatment for their children and parents simply wanting to give their children Christmas gifts.

The Augusta Chronicle began the Empty Stocking Fund in 1930 to collect money for needy families during the holidays.

In 2004, The Empty Stocking Fund received more than 1,750 requests for helping. Of these requests, 1,435 families, or 5,093 individuals, received assistance.
