Mrs. Anne C. Wood (ATLANTA, Ga.)

 Send flowers to this funeral

ATLANTA, Ga. - Mrs. Anne C. Wood slipped quietly away from us on January 17, 2006. Anne was born on February 1, 1928, in Augusta to parents, Sue Archer and Tom Chamblee, both of whom preceded her in death. Anne was raised primarily in Augusta with frequent jaunts to her grandparents' farm in Hancock County. While she spent 57 of her 77 years in the big city of Atlanta, Anne remained firmly connected to her country roots. In 1948, Anne completed her nursing education and training. While she worked as a nurse for less than two years, Anne maintained her licensure throughout her lifetime. "Just in case," she always said. In 1948, Anne met Truett Wood, a handsome young Marine who had returned to the United States after service in the Pacific Theater during World War II. They married, raised two daughters, and for nearly 33 years, worked side-by- side in Skyland Cleaners, the dry cleaning business they owned and operated on Clairmont Road in Atlanta. She and her husband sold the business in 1987 but remained in contact with many of their loyal customers and staff. In her youth, Anne was a spitfire, a true redhead. In later years, Anne became a woman who would not be rushed. She moved slow but was quick to laugh. She delighted friends and family with her fractured anecdotes and found equal delight in the tales told by others. Anne loved chocolate cheese straws from Smoak's Bakery in Augusta, the Three Tenors, old movies and her physicians, the talented and compassionate professionals who cared for her as she battled the ravages of scleroderma. Anne was a quintessential Southerner - polite, welcoming and always concerned about the wellbeing of the families of her friends and neighbors. Anne is survived by her husband of 57 years, Truett Wood of Atlanta; her two daughters, Susan Wood of Augusta and Cindy Wood of Atlanta; and her brother, George Chamblee of North Augusta. Anne will be cremated and interred in a family plot in North Augusta. She asked that no funeral services be held. Friends may make donations in her name to the Scleroderma Foundation, Attn: Donations, 300 Rosewood Drive, Suite 105, Danvers, MA 01923. The Cremation Society of The South is in charge of the arrangements, 770-420-5557. Sign the guestbook at AugustaChronicle.com
