We need lawmakers to get it right

Have you ever thought about just what it is that a carjacker does?

He takes your car by force and converts it to his use.

This is pretty much what governments do when they condemn your private property and convert it to use for a commercial purpose - because a developer can make money off it, and the government can get more tax money on the improvements.

It may be legal - amazingly the U.S. Supreme Court said so last summer - but that doesn't make it right. It's carjacking by another name, except they're taking your home or business rather than just your vehicle.

Georgia lawmakers are considering a handful of bills to curb eminent domain abuses, and the governor has signalled his complete support. Good.

Local government lobbyists, paid by your tax dollars, will work hard to stop the bills or at least water them down. May they fail miserably.

This is a fundamental American birthright. We can't believe the Supreme Court got it so wrong.

We're depending on the Georgia General Assembly to get it right.
