Thompson will not return to Gamecocks

In Columbia, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier says former defensive coordinator John Thompson, who has been on a leave of absence since December, will not return.

Spurrier announced in December that Thompson was on a leave of absence. Thompson, who was one of Spurrier's first hires after he took the job in November 2004, was not on the sideline in the Gamecocks' 38-31 loss to Missouri in the Independence Bowl.

Thompson was one of South Carolina's co-defensive coordinators along with Tyrone Nix, who was named assistant head coach in November.

  • In Carrollton, Ga., West Georgia University has deposited its Braves nickname in the same bin with such former monikers as Aggies, Bull Pups and Goats.
  • On Thursday, West Georgia's new mascot - Wolves - was announced as the school moved away from its Native American nickname that was frowned upon by the NCAA.

    West Georgia president Beheruz N. Sethna accepted the recommendation of a task force that chose Wolves over two other finalists: Patriots and RedHawks.

    Basketball

    Donovan will coach U.S. Olympic team

    In Seattle, Anne Donovan was picked to coach the United States women's 2006 world championship and 2008 Olympic basketball teams Thursday.

    Donovan, a former Olympian, will coach the team at the World Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and at the 2007 Olympic qualifying tournament.

    Federer, Davenport receive top seeds

    In Melbourne, Australia, Andy Roddick was seeded second at the Australian Open on Thursday, avoiding heavy favorite Roger Federer unless both make the final.

    Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, who lost in the final season, was seeded third, followed by Masters Cup winner David Nalbandian and Nikolay Davydenko.

    All of the women's top 10 are expected in Melbourne, with top-ranked Lindsay Davenport seeded No. 1, U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters at No. 2, WTA Championship winner Amelie Mauresmo at No. 3, Maria Sharapova at No. 4 and Mary Pierce, the 1995 Australian Open winner, at No. 5.

    French Open champion Justin Henin-Hardenne was seeded eighth. Venus Williams was seeded No. 10 and defending champion Serena Williams was No. 13.

  • In Sydney, Australia, Hewitt's 22-match winning streak at the Sydney International ended when he was upset 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 by Italy's Andrea Seppi.
  • Cheerleading

    Augusta Spartans will hold tryouts

    The Augusta Spartans will be holding cheerleader tryouts, beginning with a pre-audition clinic at 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at Center Stage Dance Academy in Martinez. Fee is $10.

    Preliminary auditions will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 22 at Health Central and from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Jan. 26. An application fee is $20.

    The final round of tryouts will be open to the public and held at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at Last Call.

    Boxing

    Carbajal, Gonzalez : class of '06

    In Canastota, N.Y., former U.S. Olympian Michael Carbajal and Mexico's Humberto "Chiquita" Gonzalez will be enshrined together in the International Boxing Hall of Fame, along with 10 other fighters and ring personalities.

    The late lightweight champion Edwin Rosario, of Puerto Rico, and boxing historian Hank Kaplan also are among the 2006 class. The induction ceremony is set for June 11.

    Other inductees will be Lou Broulliard, Jimmy Slattery, Teddy Yarosz, Jem Carney, Stanley Weston, Jarvis Astaire, Whitey Bimstein and Rodolfo Sabbatini.
