LAST YEAR: Vijay Singh won the first of his four 2005 titles, birdieing the final hole to beat two-time defending champion Ernie Els by a stroke.
LAST WEEK: Stuart Appleby won the season-opening Mercedes Championships for the third consecutive year, beating Singh with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff at wind-blown Kapalua. Appleby joined Gene Littler (1955-57) as the only players to win the winners-only tournament three years in a row.
NOTES: Michelle Wie is making her third consecutive appearance in her hometown event, and first since turning pro late last season. The 16-year-old Wie missed the cut by seven strokes last year, shooting 74-75. In 2004, she shot 72-68 to miss the cut by a stroke. She has played in three PGA Tour events and also competed on the Japan, Nationwide and Canadian tours.
