Marcus Vick faces firearms charges

In Suffolk, Va., former Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick, booted from the team last week for his behavior on and off the field, was charged Monday with pulling a gun on three teenagers during an altercation in a restaurant parking lot.

Vick surrendered at the Suffolk magistrate's office after three warrants were issued for his arrest Sunday, Magistrate Lisa Noel said.

Vick, 21, was charged with three misdemeanor counts of brandishing a firearm, and was released on $10,000 bond.

Police said the parents of a 17-year-old boy reported that Vick pointed a weapon at their son and two others during an altercation at a McDonald's in Suffolk, where Vick's mother lives, Sunday night.

If convicted of all three counts, Vick could be sentenced to up to three years in jail and a $7,500 fine, police spokeswoman Lt. Debbie George said in a statement.

Cubs, Orioles make deal for Patterson

In Chicago, outfielder Corey Patterson was traded to Baltimore for a pair of minor leaguers: shortstop Nate Spears and left-hander Carlos Perez.

Patterson, 26, hit .252 with 70 homers in parts of six major league seasons with the Cubs, appearing in 589 games.

Patterson was the third player taken overall in the 1998 amateur draft.

Former NFL running back Larry Csonka will speak at he 14th annual Greater Augusta Sports Awards Gala today at the Radisson Riverfront Hotel Augusta. The 2005 Ray Guy Award and annual G.A.M.E.S. Awards will be presented.

Gretzky mourns his grandmother's death

In Brantford, Ontario, Wayne Gretzky is mourning the death of his grandmother, three weeks after his mother died.

Betty Hockin, the grandmother of the Phoenix Coyotes coach and hockey great, died Saturday at 84 in a hospital in Brantford after being stricken with a heart attack last month.

Hockin entered the hospital one day before daughter Phyllis Gretzky was admitted for deteriorating health from lung cancer.

NASCAR legend's mother dies at 88

In Level Cross, N.C., Elizabeth Toomes Petty, the mother of racing great Richard Petty and the widow of NASCAR pioneer Lee Petty, died at 88.

She died Sunday, Petty Enterprises said. Funeral services will be private.

Henin-Hardenne humbles Hingis

In Sydney, Australia, Martina Hingis tried to put a positive spin on her first-round loss to Justine Henin-Hardenne in the Sydney International.

"I chose to come to know where I'm at," Hingis said after Henin-Hardenne's 6-3, 6-3 victory.

"I know what I'm aiming for now. ... It's good to know how I played, how the match went. She was at a different level today."

Hingis was broken in her opening service game and generally struggled with the pace as Henin-Hardenne attacked the slower second serves.

Participant killed during Dakar Rally

In Kiffa, Mauritania, Australian motorcyclist Andy Caldecott was killed in a crash during the ninth stage of the Dakar Rally.

Organizers said the 41-year-old Caldecott crashed his KTM motorbike about 155 miles into the 371.4-mile stage from Nouakchott to Kiffa.
