A man who was shot at an east Augusta apartment complex last month has died, and two men being held in connection with the shooting will probably face homicide charges, police said Sunday.
Edward Burns, 26, of Sibley Road, died Friday, according to Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen.
Mr. Burns died at about 7:28 a.m. at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Mr. Bowen said. An autopsy determined that he died of complications from multiple gunshot wounds, Mr. Bowen said.
Mr. Burns had been hospitalized since he was shot at the East Augusta Commons apartments in the 400 block of East Boundary Street on Dec. 9. He had been involved in a brawl with several young men at the complex when someone fired four shots from a .380 semiautomatic handgun, police said.
The shooting was preceded by a fight at a Richmond County school, authorities said.
Paul Dion Fowlkes, 25, a resident of the apartment complex, was arrested immediately after the shooting and charged with felony aggravated assault.
On Dec. 20, the same charge was filed against Wendell Emanuel Washington, 23. Mr. Fowlkes and Mr. Washington remained in jail Sunday with bond set at $27,600 for both men, a jail official said.
Police said the men face upgraded charges in lieu of Mr. Burns' death.
"More evidence surfaced while Mr. Burns was hospitalized, and now it's a murder investigation," Richmond County sheriff's Sgt. Richard Roundtree said. "We expect charges to be upgraded."
