North Augusta wants spirited photos

It's time for area shutterbugs to show off their best stuff.

North Augusta Cultural Arts Council is sponsoring a photography contest commemorating the city's centennial this year.

"This is something we've been talking about doing for a couple of years," said Kim Butler, a member of the contest committee. "North Augusta is at such an interesting place in its history. It's on the cusp of becoming a community that will be significantly larger. It will be interesting to document the town in photographs."

The contest is open to anyone, not just North Augusta residents. The photographs must be of North Augusta and must have been taken either in 2005 or this year.

There are three categories: amateur, professional and pupils 12 and younger.

"We hope for a cross-section of the community," Mrs. Butler said. "We would love to get everyone from children to senior citizens. We want to get North Augusta through the eyes of different people."

Photographs can be color or black-and-white, film or digital. Digital images should not be altered. Photographs should be submitted in an 8- by-10-inch size.

The contest should capture the spirit of the city and its residents, Mrs. Butler said.

Winners in the professional and amateur contests will receive $150 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third. Pupils will receive $75 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third.

Twelve photographs will be included in a 2007 North Augusta Cultural Arts Calendar. In August, there will be an exhibition of 100 photographs at the North Augusta Community Center, organizers said.

The deadline for photos is Monday, May 1.

Photographs should be dropped off at the North Augusta Star office.
