United States wins Hopman Cup opener

Lisa Raymond and Taylor Dent beat Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic, 7-6 (3), 6-2, in mixed doubles Sunday in Perth, Australia, to give the United States a 2-1 victory over Serbia and Montenegro in the Hopman Cup opener for both teams.

In the singles matches in the Australian Open tuneup event, Ivanovic beat Raymond 6-2, 6-4 and Dent tied it with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Djokovic.

Today at the Burswood Dome, Argentina will face the Netherlands, and Sweden will play Serbia and Montenegro.

- In Gold Coast, Australia, Martina Hingis will team with Tatiana Golovin in doubles at the Australian Women's Hardcourt Championships this week.

Hingis is making her competitive return to tennis today against 63rd-ranked Maria Vento-Kabchi.

In first-round singles play Sunday, Lucie Safarova upset sixth-seeded Ai Sugiyama, 6-1, 6-2, seventh-seeded Klara Koukalova defeated Meghann Shaughnessy, 6-4, 6-4, and Iveta Benesova downed wild card Sophie Ferguson, 7-5, 6-2.

- Pat Cash is making a return to the ATP Tour after an eight-year absence.

The 40-year-old Australian will play doubles with teenager Karan Rastogi in the season-opening Chennai Open that begins today.

Cash arrived at the Chennai Open as a television commentator, but accepted the invitation to pair up with the 19-year-old Rastogi.

They'll face the second-seeded duo of Rainer Schuettler and Alexander Waske.

Ex-Dodger joins Tracy in Pittsburgh

Utilityman Mike Edwards is the latest former Los Angeles Dodgers player to sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates, agreeing to a minor league contract Sunday.

Edwards hit .247 with three homers and 15 RBI in 88 games last season for Los Angeles, joining Jim Tracy, who left the Dodgers and was hired by the Pirates.

Also signing minor league contracts were former Reds prospect Gookie Dawkins and Paul Chiaffredo, the backup catcher at the Pirates' Triple-A Indianapolis farm club last season.

Comacina holds on to win Aqueduct

Comacina beat Fast Laner by a half-length in Sunday's $70,720 Interborough Handicap for fillies and mares 3 and older at Aqueduct in New York.

Ridden by Pablo Fragoso, Fast Laner covered six furlongs in 1:10.79 over the muddy track and paid $23, $11.80 and $8. Fast Laner paid $6.50 and $5.30, while Schemer paid $8.30 to show.

The 4-year-old Dixie Union filly won for the fourth time in 11 career starts, earning $42,432 for Flying Zee Stables.

U.S. drops Canada in exhibition match

In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Krissy Wendell scored two goals to help the United States beat Canada 5-3 in women's exhibition hockey Sunday.

The game was the last meeting between the teams before they head to the Olympic Games in Turin, Italy, in February. The defending Olympic champion Canadians are now 8-2 against the Americans since September.
