MORAGA, Calif. - A few minutes into the second half, Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett pulled Brett Collins aside and implored him to be more aggressive.
Message received.
Collins took over the game by scoring 12 of his career-high 31 points during an 18-0 run that led Saint Mary's to just its second win over a ranked opponent in more than 30 years, 89-80 over No. 20 Nevada on Saturday.
"Coach just told me to be aggressive," Collins said. "I felt good the past few days. I felt like I was coming on to where I was supposed to be."
Daniel Kickert added 17 points for the Gaels (6-5), who have won five of six. Saint Mary's only other win over a ranked opponent since 1974 came last season, against Gonzaga.
Marcelus Kemp scored 22 points, and Nick Fazekas added 21, but didn't score in the final 13:28 for Nevada (10-2), which had its 14-game road winning streak snapped. Mo Charlo chipped in 17 points for Nevada.
Collins, who was 8-for-11 from the field and 12-for-13 from the free throw line, had his previous high in December 2004, when he scored 18 against Sacramento State.
In Spokane, Wash., J.P. Batista scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as Gonzaga took its 30th consecutive home victory, the longest streak in the country.

Adam Morrison scored 25 points for the Bulldogs, but was held without a field goal in the second half.
No. 7 Washington had the nation's longest home winning streak snapped at 32 games earlier Saturday by Arizona in double overtime.
The Bulldogs outrebounded the Hawks (5-4) and held Saint Joseph's to just six second-chance points.
Gonzaga shot 57 percent from the field, just better than the 54 percent by Saint Joseph's.
In Lubbock, Texas, Martin Zeno scored 15 points, hit a tie-breaking free throw and grabbed a steal in the game's final seconds to save Texas Tech.
With the final seconds ticking down, UTEP tried to pass the ball inside to John Tofi, but Zeno broke up the play and grabbed the loose ball. He passed the ball downcourt before he could be fouled as time ran out.
