COLUMBIA, S.C. - When you're talking offense and South Carolina high schools, there's only one place to turn - four-time state champion Byrnes High.
So it's no surprise that three Byrnes stars head up the 2005 South Carolina AP All-State team, announced Friday.
Will Korn, the Rebels junior, is the all-state quarterback after throwing for 4,164 yards and an amazing 53 touchdowns. Two of his favorite targets join him on the elite group - receiver Jamar Anderson caught 96 passes for 1,758 yards, while the state's "Mr. Football," Prince Miller, caught six touchdowns as a running back.
Miller was named a defensive back on the all-state team, selected from nominations by AP members in South Carolina.
Korn, Anderson and Miller helped Byrnes win its fourth straight Class 4A, Division II title earlier this month, 51-8 over a Richland Northeast team whose defense was among the best in the state.
The three all-state players were the most of any South Carolina high school this year.
Richland Northeast's defense featured two all-state players in defensive lineman Adam Patterson and linebacker Rodney Paulk. Both players were part of the South Carolina team in the annual Shrine Bowl matchup against North Carolina seniors.
The only other schools that had multiple selections this year were Rock Hill, Gaffney and Daniel.
The Bearcats, which won the Class 4A "Big 16" title in 2002 and 2004, were represented by linebacker Donkay Degraffenreid and defensive back Phillips Adams.
Degraffenreid made the all-state team for the second straight season. He has been Rock Hill's top tackler the past four seasons.
Adams finished the year with 73 tackles and seven interceptions. He played in the North-South All-Star game earlier this month.
Gaffney won its second "Big 16" championship in the past three years over Summerville, 33-32, on Dec. 3. A pair of standouts who helped the Indians get there were offensive lineman Brett Irvin and linebacker Julius Wilkerson. Both played in the Shrine Bowl and both were named to the all-state team.
The team's running backs were Chris McIntosh of Daniel and Gerald Legree of Beaufort. McIntosh, a senior, rushed for 2,462 yards while Legree, also a senior, had 1,932 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Joining McIntosh was one of his Daniel offensive linemen, senior Duvall Young.
The other all-state receiver is Summerville sophomore A.J. Green, who had 75 catches for 1,422 yards and 16 touchdowns. Green also made the team as a freshman.
The tight end is Wando's Foxy Foxworth, a Shrine Bowl selection.
The rest of the offensive line were all picked for the Shrine Bowl - Daniel's Young, Dutch Fork's Garrett Anderson, Conway's Alex Wolfe and Hartsville's Jake Johnson.
Riverside's Richard Jackson, who had a South Carolina-record 64-yard field goal this season, was the all-state kicker.
Colleton County's Nick Adams was an all-purpose back. He had 16 catches for 342 yards and six touchdowns, and rushed for 165 yards, along with returning kicks and punts. On defense, Adams had 60 tackles and six interceptions.
Along with RNE's Patterson, the all-state defensive line is Chris Donaldson of Westside, Clifton Geathers of Carvers Bay and Ricky Sapp of Bamberg-Ehrhardt. Geathers was also named a USA Today All-American while Sapp will take part in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl for top high schoolers next month.
Joining Miller and Adams in the secondary are Darius Gaither of Fairfield Central and Brandon Reid of Cheraw. Gaither and Reid both ended their seasons in the Shrine Bowl.
The all-state punter is York's Spencer Lanning. He averaged better than 41 yards a kick this year. He also booted the winning 42-yard field goal in the North's 11-10 victory at the North-South all-star game.
