WASHINGTON, Ga. - Mr. William Nelms (Billy) Cofer, Jr., 71, of Washington, died December 21, 2005, at home. He was the son of the late Willom Nelms and Louise Worthen Cofer. He was a native of Greene County. He served in the National Guard and was a member of First Baptist Church, Washington. Mr. Cofer was one of the first lifetime members of the Washington-Wilkes Jaycees, was an avid Washington- Wilkes Tiger fan and supporter of Wilkes County Youth. He was the founder of Fareway Building Supplies which opened in 1976. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m., in the First Baptist Church, Washington, with Dr. John Childers and Rev. Albert Huyck officiating, with interment in Resthaven Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Jack Armour, Ed Geddings, Thomas Fanning, Mike Thornton, Billy Dyson and Wendy Cofer. Survivors include his son, Ronnie Cofer, Washington; daughters, Debbie Cofer, Newport, Tenn., and Sarah Saxon, Sylvania; sister, Dorothy Johnson, Mitchell, Ga.; grandchildren, Eric Thornton, James Brouillard, Robin Cofer and Caitlin Saxon; great-grandchildren, Samantha Thornton and Megan Thornton. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, "Together We Build Fund" or to the Washington-Wilkes High School Athletic Dept.
