AIKEN - Management responsibilities at Savannah River Site will be divided between two private contracts after 2006, a Department of Energy official said today.
The Energy Department is seeking a company to manage 49 tanks at SRS that contain nuclear waste from decades of Cold War weapons production and another to handle the operation of everything else, including Savannah River National Laboratory and other environmental cleanup, said Jeff Allison, DOE's SRS manager.
It is possible one company could bid on both contracts.
The site's current private manager, Washington Savannah River Co., manages the site on its own and is contracted to do so through at least October 2006. It and several other companies have already said they'll bid to run the site.
