Thyroid cancer keeps mother of 3 out of work

A single mother sick with thyroid cancer can't pay her bills and won't be able to give her children Christmas gifts this year unless she receives some holiday help.

The 28-year-old Augusta woman is not able to work because of her illness, she said.

She has applied for Social Security twice but has been denied. The family lives off food stamps and child support payments. The woman's family has helped out financially, but she doesn't want to become a burden on them, she said.

Her sons, ages 9 and 4, and daughter, 3, are good children, she writes. The boys are honor roll students, she said.

"They are very loving kids, and they really try their best to make me happy and smile," she writes. "I'm not able to do as much as I want to do for them, but I really pray that they could wake up Christmas day with smiles on their faces. They really deserve it."

This woman will receive assistance thanks to The Augusta Chronicle's Empty Stocking Fund. Contributions can be sent to Empty Stocking Fund, P.O. Box 1928, Augusta, GA 30903-1928. To donate online, go to www.augustachronicle.com/ emptystocking.
