DICKSON, TN. - Paul Daniel Greer, a distinguished educator with a career that spanned five decades was born on March 18, 1928 in Charlotte, Tenn. to Burton and Louise Greer. He died November 29, 2005 in Dickson, Tenn. He was graduated from Charlotte High School in 1946 where he excelled in football, basketball and several other sports. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served honorably from 1946 to 1949. On July 12, 1947, he married the former Janelle Sheley of Sylvia, Tenn. A 1951 graduate of the University of Tennessee, Mr. Greer also had a Masters Degree and Six Year Degree. While in college, Mr. Greer played football and was active in many aspects of college life. His career as an educator began at the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he taught chemistry and held various positions of increased responsibility. In 1970, he accepted a position as Headmaster of Augusta (GA) Preparatory School, where he served until 1976. He then became Head of the Upper School at Deerfield Academy in Albany, Ga. before settling in Ellijay, Ga. and eventually retiring in 1996 from Gilmer Co. High School, where he served as vice-principal. Always active in the church and community, Mr. Greer was an elder in the Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janelle Sheley Greer, Dickson; sons, Paul Daniel, Jr. (and Thea) Greer of Tampa, Fla. and Steven Hickerson (and Tana) Greer of Canton, Ga.; four grandchildren, Erin Greer, Ryan Greer, Justin Greer and Alexandra Greer and his brother, Joe (and Joyce) Greer, Charlotte. His remains are in the care of Taylor Funeral Home where services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 2, 2005, the Reverend Art Jones officiating.
