If Tommy Boyles thinks Augusta needs fresh new leadership, what in the world was he doing running for mayor? Isn't this the same Tommy Boyles who, just a few weeks ago when he was running, tried to get the public to believe that Augusta needed proven, tested leadership?
If Augusta is indeed broken and failing, it's a good bet that the roles played by Boyles for nearly 30 years in city and county government contributed to that plight. If it's as bad as Boyles describes, it hardly seems that Augustans should take his advice in trying to make a better tomorrow for our city.
If, indeed, we have leadership and trust deficits, these problems won't be solved by throwing out all of the old for the new. I hope there are still some folks around who remember what happened to the Carter administration when it took on Washington.
There is a lot to be said for seasoned experience that is blended with honesty, integrity and character. These are qualities the next mayor must have if attitudes of cooperation, compromise and progressiveness are going to prevail in the governance of this city. Willie Mays has these attributes.
I encourage the voters of Augusta to return to the polls Dec. 6 and elect Willie Mays mayor.
