Empty Stocking: Bills leave mother no money for presents

A single mother raising her three daughters and her sister's two children has no money left over to give them a happy holiday.

The Augusta woman, 30, has been unemployed since June after complications from a pregnancy and depends on food stamps and child support payments to provide for her family.

"I have fallen on hard times," the woman writes. "I really want to make this Christmas special for them, but I am on a tight budget now."

She has custody of her sister's 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter because of their mother's drug problems, she writes.

After paying bills and buying necessities, there is not enough money for treats and holiday gifts, she said.

"They are really good kids and we really try to stick together through hard times, and I would do anything in this world for them," she writes. "They really deserve it."

This woman will receive assistance thanks to The Augusta Chronicle's Empty Stocking Fund. Contributions can be sent to Empty Stocking Fund, P.O. Box 1928, Augusta, GA 30903-1928. To donate online, go to www.augustachronicle.com/emptystocking.
