Marlins to send Delgado to Mets

The New York Mets reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday to acquire Carlos Delgado and $7 million from the Florida Marlins for first baseman Mike Jacobs and pitcher Yusmeiro Petit, a baseball official familiar with the talks said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal was not final.

It is the second tentative deal struck this week by the payroll-slashing Marlins, who also have a pending agreement to send 2003 World Series MVP Josh Beckett to the Boston Red Sox for three prospects, two of whom are former Augusta GreenJackets players.

- A month after winning the World Series, the Chicago White Sox began reworking a roster that produced the team's first championship in 88 years.

Injury-plagued slugger Jim Thome is on his way to the White Sox and gritty center fielder Aaron Rowand, one of the top defensive outfielders in baseball, is headed to Philadelphia.

The teams reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday that would send Thome and cash from the Phillies to Chicago for Rowand and two minor league pitchers. The trade is subject to both big league players passing physicals - Thome is scheduled to have his exam Friday.

- Bobby Howry agreed to a $12 million, three-year contract with the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, becoming the second free agent reliever in a week to join the team's restocked bullpen.

Woods shakes off illness to lead Slam

Tiger Woods wasn't about to call in sick just yet. Not with a record sixth Grand Slam title on the line.

Woods overcame a stomach virus and labored to a 5-under-par 67 on Tuesday in Poipu Beach, Hawaii, to take a three-stroke lead over defending champion Phil Mickelson.

The exclusive two-day event for the winners of this year's majors wrapped up late Wednesday night.

U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell had 73 and Vijay Singh had 75.

Woods was visibly affected by a virus that forced him to go on antibiotics and miss Monday's pro-am. But, he somehow found his form in muggy conditions with temperatures in the 80s at the oceanside Poipu Bay Golf Course.

Woods had a rough start. His drive on the opening hole found a fairway bunker, and his second shot caught the lip of the trap and traveled only 6 feet.

"Once I threw up in the bushes behind the first green, I felt a lot better," Woods said.
